"Expressing fluidity through solid form by reimagining waves with a strong yet dynamic material."

Design process

The five images above were all sketch models that used different techniques to mimic a liquid motion. Ultimately the bottom right sketch model was chosen as the basis of our development as its boundaries mimiced a shell and its internal forms embodied the movement of the ocean the most.

The final shape is a complex axis, containing twisted and curved planes. The curve of the main shape and the folds of the strips are designed crash downward, mimicking the collapse of real waves inwards on top of themselves in the ocean.

Designing Various Sound Vessels

This is a CAD model I created in Onshape for a percussion instrument inspired by the cello and frog guiros that was not ultimately picked to be developed. The chamber-like shape allows for the sound to project, while the interaction between the stick and the textures in the instrument create different sounds.

FINAL DEVELOPMENT

Productiont

The design ultimately chosen was a modern, slightly neo-gothic version of the ancient Aztec death whistle. The original sketch model was made with plastilina, with the concavity in its side serving as the chamber for sound to resonate. Ultimately the modeling was done in Blender in order to achieve the "sculpted" texture desired in the product, and Bambu Studio was the slicing software used for 3D printing in PLA.
